| "Substantial reduction in translation costs" |
Stork Food & Dairy Systems develops and produces sterilisation and filling machines for the dairy, soft drinks, food and pharmaceutical industries.
This involves complex technology, which is sold worldwide. It is self evident that such high quality machines also require the development of high quality documentation.
For many years, Triview has been the supplier of the documentation for Stork Food & Dairy Systems in Amsterdam. We develop the documentation on demand. This involves user and maintenance manuals, which are translated into English. To this end, Triview uses database publishing with Framemaker, a solution that has been specifically developed for Stork Food & Dairy Systems.
Since Stork food & Dairy Systems sells its machines worldwide, the manuals also have to be translated. After the manuals have been developed, Triview sees to it that they are translated. Triview also arranges for the translation of the HMI software.
During the past few years we saw a significant increase in the amount of repetitions in the manuals. This had a direct impact on the translation costs. Consequently, a derivative from a manual quickly resulted in substantial translation costs.
Both Stork and Triview agreed that a solution had to be found for this. The outcome being that Triview advised Stork to have the manual development done in Author-it in future.
A great advantage of Author-it is that a language variant of the manual is saved within the database. During the publication process, Author-it will only release those parts of the text that have changed in respect of the earlier version for translation.
The transition from Framemaker to Author-it went smoothly and Triview was able to publish and translate the first manual within a matter of weeks. A first publication in Spanish immediately paid off with a 30% saving on the normal translation costs! This percentage will increase further with subsequent versions.
Other customers where Triview had implemented Author-it earlier have meanwhile benefited from a 65% reduction.
The implementation of Author-it within the Stork organisation also means that an important step forward has been taken in the single sourcing concept. Stork can now reuse the XML output from Author-it for several purposes within the the organisation. For instance, Sales can use parts of the content in quotes and, with the push of a button, documentation can be sent to the User Interface as Context Sensitive Help.
Triview is also currently holding talks on e-learning and instruction material, which, in the context of single sourcing, can also be developed from the Author-it database.
